Community Preservation Workshops

17630163_10206548635233386_6401207539568606492_nAotea Utanganui is proud to be supported by Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga and The National Preservation Office Te Tari Tohu Taonga to provide advice for community groups on managing and caring for their archives, records, photographs and audio/visual collections. These workshops focus on topics such as digitisation, funding sources, the proper housing of archives, photos and audio/visual collections, long-term storage solutions and family history management. These workshops can be held at the museum, workplaces or local marae upon request by contacting the museum at museum@stdc.govt.nz

1.  Photo Album Preservation Workshop

Bring along your magnetic/adhesive photo albums to this photo album preservation workshop at the museum. These albums appear yellow in appearance and this is due to the acidic adhesive used during their manufacture. They were sold during the 1960s-1990’s, where families used them prolifically before they were found to contribute to photo decay. Join Kaitiaki Pukapuka-a-Rohe/District Archivist Cameron S. Curd for a collaborative preservation workshop to learn the tips and tricks to save your precious photos today. Bring your magnetic/adhesive photo albums along with you.

2.  Analogue & Digital Media Preservation Workshop

What is analogue & digital media? Analogue media is objects like VHS, Cassette Tapes, and Floppy Disks, while digital media can be anything from CDs to MiniDV Tapes. This workshop will help you to understand what types of media you have at home, and how best to digitise and preserve these for the future. Learn about the process of digitisation, and how cultural institutions are facing the costly challenges in preserving their materials. Join Kaitiaki Pukapuka-a-Rohe/District Archivist Cameron S. Curd for a collaborative preservation workshop to learn the tips and tricks to save your precious films, videos and audio tapes.
