Whakairo

Today’s object is a whakairo. This item is a small whakairo measuring 45cm in length, and 15 cm wide. It was carved at the Maori School of Art, Ohinemutu in Rotorua by H.T. Haupapa. The whakairo was given to Marilyn Wills (teacher) as a gift to Manutahi School. Apparently, it is connected to the architect of the school in 1937, when the school was rebuilt after a fire in that year.
