Today’s object is a whakairo. This item is a small whakairo measuring 45cm in length, and 15 cm wide. It was carved at the Maori School of Art, Ohinemutu in Rotorua by H.T. Haupapa. The whakairo was given to Marilyn Wills (teacher) as a gift to Manutahi School. Apparently, it is connected to the architect of the school in 1937, when the school was rebuilt after a fire in that year.

If you have information about this whakairo that would be useful for our catalogue, contact the museum on 0800 111 323 or museum@stdc.govt.nz, Aotea Utanganui Museum of South Taranaki Heritage Collection 1996.056.1.
