Heritage item of the week: ear piercer

This week’s object is an ear piercer. It is a small tool with a hinged handle, a trigger at the bottom, and a needle with a release/pull control at the end. This ear piercer was used by Alexander J Cooper, who was the jeweller in Pātea c1920. One of the oldest forms of body modification, ear piercing is prevalent in many different cultures and earrings are made in a wide range of materials and styles.

If you have information about this ear piercer or Alexander J Cooper that would be useful for our catalogue, contact the Museum on 0800 111 323 or museum@stdc.govt.nz, Aotea Utanganui Museum of South Taranaki Heritage Collection 2003.119.1.
