What are all those houses?
A couple called in today to have a look round and asked why there are so many houses in Kakaramea, a small town on the outskirts of Patea, when there is nothing else there. I explained that right around Taranaki there are small towns, like Kakaramea, that were clustered around our dairy factories. Over time factories joined together, getting bigger and bigger, until we arrived at what we have today – global giant Fonterra. Of course that’s a considerable simplification of a process which took many decades, but the end result is the same – tiny towns seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The diary factory shown below is at Ngaere, between Eltham and Stratford.
