Turn on the light
Want to put on the light? Just flick a switch, or even use a remote control. So easy, isn’t it. In fact, generally our power supply is so easy, and so reliable, that most of us don’t give it a second thought until the power bill arrives (my latest one was quite impressive, in a depressing sort of way).
Go back to the early days of settlement in South Taranaki and power was not such a simple matter. This photo shows the original hydro electric plant at Kakaramea, which supplied electricity to Patea. It was built in 1900 and the photo was taken around 1902. Note the man on horseback in the background.
