A Roman Road

In 2010 my husband and I travelled to Italy for the Legato Exhibition, which commemorated WWII soldiers who served in battles around Monte Cassino. We toured some historic sites, and famous battle fields. One of the places we went to was the Church of Santa Maria della Libera in Aquino. The town had been founded in the 4th century BC by the Volsci, who successfully defended it against Samnite invasions, before Roman’s conquest.
Next to the Church is an ancient Roman Road reportedly used by Marc Antony who had the Roman equivalent of a modern-day holiday home in Aquino. It was amazing to walk on a road that Marc Antony had also walked on. One of the things we found about being in Italy was the sense of being surrounded by truly ancient landscapes; we really are such a new country by comparison.
