I sometimes think about the men who served as Councillors, Mayor and so on in the early days of our district. What made them want to ‘do their bit’? Were they educated and found a civic role easy? Or were they sometimes poorly educated, but strong-minded, and struggled through the formalities with grit and determination? What was their vision for our district? The photo below is the mayoral chains for Patea – I look at these and wonder what they meant to people 100 years ago.
We have a gallery of Mayoral portraits from years gone by in the Livingstone Baker Archives and Reading Room. Why not drop by and look them in the eye for yourself? They each have a story to tell.
