We’ve got a blackboard, small ‘slates’ – which are just blackboard offcuts – and chalk in the Education Room. From my office I can often hear people as they first spot it. Children grab the chalk straight away because they can see it’s okay for them to do so. Older adults make that ‘Ooh!’ sound we all make when something really pleases or surprises us. Then they start talking about their memories of blackboards at school, or learning to write tidily with a pencil before being allowed a fountain pen.
During Paepae in the Park our Front of House, Mollie, decided that instead of cleaning it regularly she’d just leave it and see what happened. We both love the result; it’s this lovely multi-layered, colourful jumble of people being happy with nothing more than a piece of chalk!.
