Exploring the layers

This morning a group of younger children enjoyed playing with our collection of soft toy sea creatures, looking at the Museum’s fossils and thinking about how fossils are formed. Education and Events Officer Rob Groat was asked what an ancient sea creature had died of. His laughing reply that they didn’t eat their vegies was met with a very firm “No, they eat fish” from one clever young lady!

Rob provided commentary on a slideshow of the fossil recovery of Patea Beach in 2010 and talked about how the layers form, what might be in each layer and gave them some fossils to handle. The children used collage to create their own layers and populate them with drawn and collaged fossils.
